VENICE

Known as the Sharks Tooth Capital of the world, Venice is located in Southwest Florida on the Gulf of Mexico, midway between Tampa and Fort Myers.  It is about 20 miles to downtown Sarasota.  In 1925, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers engaged famous city planner, John Nolen, and landscape architect, Prentiss French, to design a town reminiscent of its Italian namesake.  Venice was incorporated as a town at that time.

Building began in earnest in 1926.  The first town council was selected and police and fire departments were established.  On May 9, 1927, Venice was incorporated as a city. Venice became known as the City on the Gulf because it is one of the few cities on the west coast of Florida that occupies a coastal area with no barrier island. What is now referred to as the "Island of Venice" was created in 1967 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed the Intracoastal Waterway through the city.

Venice is known for its Historic MainStreet business district and its lovely historic residential areas.  Drive down West Venice Avenue and you'll notice massive banyan trees and live oaks draped with Spanish moss.  Stately Mediterranean Revival style homes line the avenue with beautiful wrought iron doors and window details, lovely archways and mysterious, shady courtyards.  When you reach the end of Venice Avenue, you've reached the Gulf of Mexico.  Stroll along Venice Beach and enjoy the beauty and vastness of the Gulf beyond.  Toward evening, enjoy some of the most the spectacular sunsets.

There are many opportunities to relax with 14 miles of Gulf beachfront, 5 major beaches, fine shelling, fossilized sharks' tooth hunting and a host of water activities, including swimming, boating, fishing and water sports.  Shoppers can enjoy many charming gift shops, antique stores and boutique clothing shops along palm tree-lined avenues.  Venice features many fine restaurants and coffee houses along with a variety of art and music venues.
