When she moved here in 1910, Bertha Palmer, widow of Chicago developer Potter Palmer, was not the first to discover the 30 acre peninsula overlooking Little Sarasota Bay that is now called Historic Spanish Point. Native Americans occupied the land more than 5,000 years ago and pioneer homesteaders moved there in the 1800s. A wealthy socialite, Mrs. Palmer built extensive gardens on her waterfront winter estate, Osprey Point, now known as Historic Spanish Point. You can explore both ancient Native American and pioneer cultures at this incredibly well preserved pre-historic Indian village site. Step inside a 5,000 year old earthen mound, and see shells, pottery, and tools of the area's earliest inhabitants.
Spanish Point is located on U.S. 41 in Osprey. Call for more information at 941-966-5214 or visit the website at www.historicspanishpoint.org.
